| I used to work for an organization
called the Indian Center for Human Rights and Law. We had a
project together with Greenpeace. That project dealt with all
toxic hotspots in the chemical industry in the Vapi Valsad area
in Gujarat. Later on Greenpeace asked me to join them and I
did.
In 2000 the
multinational company Dow Chemicals bought the chemical factory
Union Carbide in Bhopal. Greenpeace started a web-based action
to call upon Dow to take responsibility for the enormous pollution
in the area as a result of the huge disaster happened in Bhopal
in 1984. A lot of people were killed and people are continuing
to suffer. People are still living in this poisoned area and
are surrounded by toxic chemicals. The great thing I liked
about this action is that Greenpeace got together with these
people, the victims. Instead of fighting for them, we fought
side by side. |
